Earth is a fascinating place; the amalgamation of logical and illogical mysteries make it even more fascinating. Human history has the record of many such mysteries, making the planet a little of exciting of an inhabitant than it already is.

Some of these mysteries can be explained with the help of proper evidence while others remain unsolved. Even after several attempts of investigations, these mysteries remain unsolved. Neither science nor natural forces could bring a proper culmination to these acts.

And this is why we have brought these 10 unsolved mysteries as the focus of today’s article.

10 Unsolved mysteries that you should know

In this section of the article, we have listed these unsolved mysteries along with as much information as we could gather. The list is prepared in a descending format, so keep reading the article to know, which mystery has piqued most of the interests till this date.

10. The Taos Hum

The Taos Hum is one of the most fascinating unsolved mysteries in history.

Taos is a town located in north-central New Mexico. This small town is a home to a small community as well as a low drone known as The Taos Hum. The hum was reported in early 1990s. A survey was conducted among the residents of the town shortly after, which revealed the results that only 2 percent of the population could hear the hum.

Several investigations and researches have been conducted since the discovery of the hum, but no source was detected. Even sensitive equipment were set up in the houses of the ‘hearers’ for measuring the vibrations. However, absolutely no source was found.

There are a variety of theories surrounding the unsolved mystery of The Taos Hum. These theories range from psychological to paranormal establishments, such as underground UFO bases, secret government mind control and so on.

After an extensive research it was found that the nature of the sound varies from people to people. To some it sounds like a buzz, to others it’s a hum. These differences in statements have made it even harder to solve the mystery. Hence, The Taos Hum remains as one of the most fascinating unsolved mysteries of the world till today.

9. Stonehenge

You must have heard the name of Stonehenge, as it is listed as one of the man-made wonders of the world. But it is also known as one of the most fascinating unsolved mysteries the earth has ever witnessed.

Let us first know what exactly Stonehenge is.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is an ancient site built as several rings of stone in the middle of a barren land. According to research Stonehenge was built around 5000 years ago, during 3000 BC by the late Neolithic people. However, there are no clear evidence of why and how Stonehenge was built in the middle of nowhere and that is why it remains as one of the biggest unsolved mysteries of the planet.

The mystery majorly surrounds the fact that how those huge stones were carried and given shape of rings without the help of any technology or even metal for that matter. According to archaeologists, UK is the only place where these kinds of stone exist. Precisely, these stones can be found in Preseli Hills in north Pembrokeshire in Wales, which is nearly 200 miles away from Salisbury Plain, where Stonehenge is located. Thus, this opens up another debate of how these stones travelled all the way from the source to the location.

Some say these stones were carried majorly via water, some say it’s the log-roller to do the job, but no definite answer has been found yet.

Now if we discuss about the purpose of the stones and Stonehenge, then there are three different theories that suggest three different assumptions of the usage of the same. According to Archaeologists, Stonehenge can be a part of larger neolithic sites scattered around the British Isles. On the other hand, Archeoastronomy suggests that all the stones of Stonehenge are sited and corelated in way that signifies the events of planets and their orbits. Hence, Stonehenge might be a place where ancient astronomy took place.

Another theory of new age viewpoint says that it might be a place of religious practices. But no one knows the right answer till this date, making Stonehenge one of the biggest and most fascinating unsolved mysteries to the world.

8. The Loch Ness Monster

As the next feature of the list, we have The Loch Ness Monster as one of the most fascinating unsolved mysteries of the world.

Loch Ness is a lake located in Scotland and The Loch Ness Monster is known to be a giant marine creature residing inside the lake. While some people possess a strong belief reading the monster’s existence, others discard the claims with proper evidence.

The reports of the Loch Ness Monster surfaced due to a stone carving by the Pict, which depicts the existence of a giant mysterious monster with flippers. The very first written record of the same appears in a biography of St. Columba. However, there are certainly no solid proof that supports the claim.

The Loch Ness Monster

Over that period of time, several other reports of the monster’s appearance have been recorded but it reached its peak during 1933. In April of the same year a couple claimed to see a huge ‘dragon’ like creature as they crossed the road adjacent to Loch Ness lake.

In the same year Daily Mail appointed Marmaduke Wetherell, a big-game hunter, to find evidence of the monster’s existence. Wetherell revealed that he found large footprints of “a very powerful soft-footed animal about 20 feet [6 meters] long.”  However, zoologists debunked the claim by stating that these footprints can be made using an umbrella stand or an ashtray with a hippopotamus leg as a base.

In the next year, 1934, English physician Robert Kenneth Wilson photographed the monster, which is the only photographer proof supporting the existence of Loch Ness Monster. But this photograph, too, was claimed as fake in 1994 as it could be easily reenacted with a plastic or wooden head and body.

In 2018, a DNA survey was conducted in the Loch Ness lake, which determined that there is no giant creature residing in it. Nevertheless, there is still a possibility of the Loch Ness Monster to be an oversized eel.

Thus, the Loch Ness Monster remains as another of the most fascinating unsolved mysteries ever.

7. The Dyatlov Pass Incident

The Dyatlov Pass Incident is one of the most chilling and terrifying unsolved mysteries to ever occur.

In 1959 a group of nine young Soviet hikers were found dead in questionable situation. This group of young hikers were led by Igor Dyatlov, whose name signifies the incident now. Igor Dyatlov and his friends were found dead near their abandoned tents. All of the victims bore severe injuries and some of them even had signs of radiation.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident

According to reports, the group left for Urals and sat their tent on a remote mountain, which was known as Kholat Syakhl during that time. After a few weeks of the incident a search team arrived at the location and found each body in different situation. Some of the victims were only in their underwear despite of the harsh cold weather, one supposedly bit off his own knuckle, one had a fractured skull, two had no eyes, and one of these two had no tongue.

The initial investigation closed the case naming it as an accident caused by “unknown natural force”. Later, many theories sprung up including military involvement, yeti attack and so on. But nothing seemed to support the horrifying death of the students.

On 2019, Russian government reopened the case and concluded it saying that the deaths were caused by an avalanche, which certainly doesn’t answer all of the questions surrounding the deaths. And the Dyatlov Pass Incident remains as one of the most chilling unsolved mysteries in history.

6. The Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer haunts the halls of unsolved mysteries. This unidentified serial killer terrorized the San Francisco Bay Area in the late 1960s. At least five victims fell prey to his attacks, but the true number may be higher. The brutality of the crimes, coupled with the Zodiac's chilling taunts, sent shivers down spines.

He craved notoriety, boasting of his killings and demanding his cyphers be printed in newspapers. These complex codes, some still unsolved, promised to reveal his identity. The Zodiac reveled in the media frenzy, toying with police and the public. He even threatened to massacre school children, adding a layer of terror to his twisted game.

The Zodiac Killer

Despite a massive investigation, the Zodiac vanished without a trace. Suspects emerged, only to be cleared through lack of evidence. The case went cold, leaving behind a legacy of fear and frustration. Amateur sleuths continue to pore over the Zodiac's cryptic messages, hoping to crack the code and finally bring this infamous killer to justice.

The Zodiac Killer's unsolved murders stand as a chilling reminder of the darkness that can lurk in the shadows. It's a case that continues to baffle investigators and remains a captivating, unsolved mystery.

5. The Voynich Manuscript

The Voynich Manuscript is a centuries-old enigma that continues to baffle scholars and cryptologists. This peculiar book, filled with strange symbols and illustrations, has been a source of fascination and frustration for generations. The unsolved mysteries surrounding its origin, language, and purpose make it one of history's most intriguing puzzles.

Carbon dating suggests the manuscript was created sometime in the 15th century, but its authorship and prior ownership remain shrouded in secrecy. Theories abound, linking it to famous figures like Roger Bacon and even the legendary alchemist Jacobus Sinapius.  However, none of these connections have been conclusively proven.

The Voynich Manuscript

The biggest unsolved mystery lies in the text itself. Written in an unknown language and script, the Voynich Manuscript defies comprehension. The bizarre illustrations offer little assistance, depicting fantastical plants, unidentified celestial bodies, and curious figures bathing in strange pools. Attempts to decipher the text using cryptographic methods or by linking it to known languages have so far been unsuccessful.

Is the Voynich Manuscript a scientific treatise, a coded message, or perhaps even an elaborate hoax?  This is yet another unsolved mystery. The lack of clear context surrounding the illustrations and the nonsensical nature of some recurring symbols cast doubt on its legitimacy. However, the sheer amount of work put into its creation suggests a serious purpose.

The Voynich Manuscript remains a tantalizing puzzle, a testament to the enduring power of the unknown. With every new analysis and technological advancement, hope flickers that its secrets might finally be unlocked. Until then, it serves as a reminder of the mysteries that still lurk within the vast library of human history.

4. The Mary Celeste

The Mary Celeste is a chilling emblem of maritime mysteries. In 1872, this seemingly ordinary merchant ship was discovered adrift in the Atlantic Ocean, completely deserted. The lifeboat was missing, along with all crew members and the captain's family. The eerie aspect? The ship itself was largely unharmed. Cargo remained untouched, and there were no signs of struggle or violence.

This lack of evidence unleashed a torrent of theories. Some suspected a mutiny, where the crew took the lifeboat and plundered the ship, leaving no trace behind. Others believed the answer lay at sea, with theories of violent storms, rogue waves, or even colossal squids wreaking havoc on the Mary Celeste. Perhaps the most captivating ideas ventured into the realm of the supernatural, with tales of ghostly encounters or sudden disappearances into another dimension.

Despite exhaustive investigations, the true fate of the Mary Celeste remains shrouded in mystery. The lack of conclusive clues continues to fuel speculation over a century later. The Mary Celeste's unsolved disappearance stands as a testament to the enduring power of maritime mysteries, a haunting reminder of the vast secrets the ocean holds.

3. The Lost City of Atlantis

Atlantis, the legendary island nation swallowed by the sea, has captivated imaginations for centuries. Plato's writings, penned around 360 BC, first introduced the world to this advanced civilization that met a watery demise due to its hubris. These dialogues, however, were more philosophical allegories than historical accounts.

The lack of concrete evidence fuels the unsolved mystery of Atlantis.  Despite vast improvements in underwater exploration technology, no sunken city matching Plato's descriptions has been discovered. This absence has led many scholars to believe Atlantis is purely mythical.

The Lost City of Atlantis

However, the allure of Atlantis persists. Enthusiasts point to intriguing possibilities.  Could stories of Santorini's massive volcanic eruption, which devastated a Minoan civilization around 1600 BC, be distorted echoes of a lost Atlantis?  Perhaps other ancient societies, like the Mycenaeans, were misremembered as the grand kingdom Plato described.

The unsolved mysteries surrounding Atlantis continue to inspire exploration and debate.  Was it a real place, or a cautionary tale woven into a philosophical discussion?  As long as the answer remains elusive, the legend of Atlantis will undoubtedly persist, a testament to humanity's enduring fascination with the unknown.

2. The Identity of Jack the Ripper

Jack the Ripper, a name synonymous with terror, has haunted London's Whitechapel district for over a century.  The unsolved mysteries surrounding his identity continue to captivate the world.  Between August and November of 1888, at least five women, all prostitutes, were brutally murdered and mutilated in a similar fashion.  While there were other killings in Whitechapel at the time, the savagery of these five linked them to a single perpetrator.

The Identity of Jack the Ripper

Despite a massive police investigation, Jack the Ripper vanished into the fog.  Theories about his identity abound, with suspects ranging from butchers and doctors with anatomical knowledge to deranged members of high society.  Letters, some possibly hoaxes, signed by "Jack the Ripper" fueled the public's fear and taunted the police.  The lack of forensic science at the time further hampered the investigation, leaving crucial evidence uncollected.

The Ripper's motives are just as murky as his identity.  Were the killings misogynistic attacks on women of the night?  Was there a deeper, more ritualistic purpose?  These questions remain unanswered, adding to the mystique of the case.  Jack the Ripper's reign of terror may have been brief, but the unsolved mysteries surrounding him continue to inspire endless speculation and solidify his place as one of history's most infamous serial killers.

1. The Bermuda Triangle

The Bermuda Triangle, a loosely defined region in the western North Atlantic, has become synonymous with unsolved mysteries. Ships and planes vanish without a trace, instruments malfunction, and the survivors' tales are often bizarre. This enigmatic patch of ocean has fueled speculation for decades, with theories ranging from paranormal forces to undiscovered underwater cities.

One of the most famous disappearances is that of Flight 19, a group of five US Navy torpedo bombers that vanished in 1945. The pilot's final transmissions spoke of erratic compass readings and disorientation before all contact was lost. Similarly, numerous ships have been found completely abandoned, with no signs of struggle or distress calls.

The Bermuda Triangle does have some well-documented natural hazards. Sudden storms can create monstrous waves that overwhelm even large vessels. The Sargasso Sea, a region within the Triangle, is filled with thick mats of seaweed that can disable a ship's rudder. Additionally, the shallow continental shelf can cause rapid changes in water depth, potentially disorienting navigational instruments.

However, the number of disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle is not statistically unusual for a heavily trafficked shipping lane.  The US Coast Guard points out that modern search and rescue techniques often locate vessels in distress within the Triangle. Despite explanations, the legend persists, a testament to the enduring human fascination with the unknown.
